Looking back over the programme I think we have had another very interesting start to our academic year. In October we had Ulrike Horstmann-Guthrie on “Haunted Houses and Avenging Females: Victorian Ghost Stories”, in November Dr Caroline Blinder on “Flannery O’Connor to Cormack McCarthy: Gothic and the American South”, in December our President, Professor Warren Chernaik, on “’Mine iron heart’ – Grace and Despair in Donne” followed by the Christmas party at the Marlborough Arms, and in January Emeritus Professor John Stokes on “Dandy, Double, Decadent: the queer connections of Oscar Wilde.”
For the rest of this academic year our programme at Birkbeck is as follows:
3 March 2018 Room 538 Charles Peake Memorial Lecture – Professor Tom Healy, University of Sussex: “English Menace: Drama from Shakespeare to Pinter.”
21 April 2018 Room 538 Dr. Roy Booth, Royal Holloway College: “Shakespeare’s Sonnets.”
day trip on 19 May 2018 Proposed trip to Jane Austen’s House Museum
9 June 2018 Room 538 Rachel Holmes: “Of Feminist Biography”, followed by the AGM
The proposed literary trip in May is to Jane Austen’s House Museum in Hampshire, travelling by coach from central London and having lunch near the Museum. The cost of travel, entry to the Museum and a simple hot lunch, which would be payable in advance, is estimated at £35. Further details will appear on the ULEMLA website http://ulemla.org.uk and at our meeting in March when payments or expressions of interest will be sought. If you are not able to be there you can also contact our Social and Visits Secretary, Maggy Kew, for details at email@example.com. The final date for bookings will be our April talk.
We look forward to seeing you and your friends at our meetings. Please take every opportunity to publicize the Association so that we can increase our membership and continue to provide such a wide-ranging programme for a very modest subscription.
